Mason County 07/05/2023:

Burn Ban Update
In accordance with a policy of the Mason County Commissioners to be consistent with the Dept. of Natural Resources and restrict certain burning activities when the National Fire Danger Rating System is at a “High” level, effective 1201 AM on Friday July 7, 2023, recreational burning (campfires, cooking, including charcoal grills and pleasure fires in a concrete, rock or steel ring) shall be prohibited on all Mason County lands not under DNR or Federal jurisdiction. Please note that Residential and Land Clearing burning were restricted in June which means no type of open burning will be permitted in the County. Your cooperation in helping keep Mason County fire safe this fire season is appreciated.

Our Beavers…

Context: we’ve been endlessly dealing with our beavers filling our culverts (and hence flooding Eagle Mtn Drive sometimes) rather than just maintaining their dam (as per our original owner/beaver agreement!) There have recently been ongoing discussions about what to do about this. Here is some info from the Dept of Fish and Wildlife:

You can find information on beavers including tips to prevent conflict as well as legal status and protections online at, Beaver | Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife.

A property owner, the owner’s immediate family, an employee, or a tenant of property may trap or kill a beaver on that property if the beaver is threatening human safety or causing property damage (RCW 77.36.030). In such cases, no special trapping permit is necessary for the use of live traps. However, a special trapping permit is required for the use of all traps other than live traps (RCW 77.15.19277.15.194WAC 220-417-040). There are no exceptions for emergencies and no provisions for verbal approval. All special trapping permit applications must be in writing on a form available from WDFW.

February 2, 2021 DNR Replanting/Herbicides

Multiple community members expressed concern with the Washington State Department of Natural Resource’s (DNR) plan to use glyphosate and
other herbicides in the clear cut nearest to Windflower Way. There were concerns about groundwater contamination as well as concerns about the general well-being of plants, animals and people.

After multiple meetings with DNR, the agency planted in the clear cut without using herbicides.

This is a something of an experiment from the agency’s perspective. From what the board has learned, it is very unusual for DNR to agree not to spray an area as the agency believes this increases the time it takes trees to grow, and therefore the state’s profit margins on those trees.

DNRs decision is not binding, and the agency plans to do a study in the summer to see if tree growth is being impeded by underbrush or damaged in other ways. It is possible that if the agency is unhappy with tree growth or there is damage to saplings, herbicide will be used at that time.

⇒ To help prevent spraying in the future, DNR has advised that we stay vigilant with removal of scotch broom and actively report activities that damage the recently-planted saplings, like off road vehicle use in this area.

DNR let us know that all the trees planted right now are exclusively Douglas Fir, and that we can expect more trees of the same species planted within the next couple of weeks. We were also told the next harvest date for that area is likely about 60 years off.

The board will try to stay informed as possible and continue to work with DNR to avoid herbicides use and work on other issues that might have harm or impact on our little community from the clear cut area.

Just a reminder, all fireworks are prohibited, anywhere, within our community!

October 9, 2017:    Facebook!

We now have a Facebook page! Thanks to Chantelle Wisner for getting this started. It won’t replace our webpage (which is currently being updated), but adds a communication channel for us all. Check it out!

August 2016: Lake Algae Bloom

We have an algae bloom starting in our lake near lots 3, 20, and 19. These have been analyzed and are non-toxic, but we would still like to limit the algae forming. Blooms can be a result of excess phosphate (or phosphorus), which can be present due to the use of cleaners and fertilizers containing phosphate. Please look at the ingredients in your cleaners and fertilizers, and use non-phosphate alternatives.

July 2015: Deer and wildlife

Please be extra careful when you are driving to watch for wildlife this summer and fall. There has been substantial clear cutting and many deer and other animal habitats have been disrupted. We have all seen many more deer by the roads at all times of the day. Drive carefully for their sake and your own!

Electronic Newsletter:

Our Newsletters are now available online on our website, in the Members Only section. They are no longer being mailed out, which saves the HOA postage costs, and saves a tree or two. An email is sent out to the membership when a Newsletter is posted.

Paths to the DNR Trails:

There has been a significant change in the HOA stance on paths into the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) trail system since the December letter was mailed to you. Extensive legal advice has made it clear that the HOA Board cannot put the membership and Board in the position of implicitly advocating the use of illegal, unsanctioned DNR paths. (Both paths, on lot 17, and the one between lots 10 and 11, are illegal trails, and not built nor maintained by the DNR.) The DNR has decided to permanently close the existing two trails, in accordance with RCW 46.09.120(1)(i).
